The U.S. press is jumping on the Italian Vanity Fair story that Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s half-brother is living in a shack in Africa on less than a dollar a month. Here’s a story from the Chicago Sun-Times.
As you can expect, some of the reader comments on the various articles are unkind. I’m wondering about the timing of this story, which clearly has been out there for awhile. As an astrologer, I’m curious if we can see it in the candidate’s solar return chart.
It’s interesting that in his solar return, Obama has the Sun in Leo conjunct Mercury, the planet of young people. (Obama’s half-brother is 26.) I personally would attribute this story, if it is true, to the Moon/Mars conjunction in Virgo opposing Uranus in Pisces straddling the Ascendant/Descendant of the solar return chart. You can read my post on Obama’s solar return here.
It’s not unusual to see a prominent Uranus in the charts of people who have stepchildren, half-siblings, adopted children, and other features of blended families. George Hussein Onyango Obama is the son of Obama’s father, but not his mother Stanley Ann Dunham Soetoro.
Even though George Obama’s pitiful condition is making global headlines this week, it’s not as if his existence is a complete surprise. According to the Sun-Times article, “In the book Dreams from My Father, Obama identified eight half-brothers and sisters from four other marriages or relationships of his parents.”
While Obama has made his way in the world, he certainly can’t be responsible for all his half-siblings’ well-being. I’m usually not one to quote Scripture, but Obama can’t be expected to be his “brother’s keeper,” or his sister’s, for that matter.
In Obama’s natal chart, Venus at 1 degree of Cancer is the ruler of his third house of siblings. It’s sextile Pluto in Virgo and sextile Chiron, the Wounded Healer, which is in Pisces.
I’m sure that the politician feels guilty on some level that the lifestyle he enjoys as an American is materially richer than those of his half-siblings. However, anthropologists know that people in developing countries often have stronger social ties and may be richer than their cousins in the industrialized world on that score. But having good friends doesn’t pay the rent, though it may help you from going hungry if your comrades invite you to share a meal. (By the way, Obama’s mom was an anthropologist.)
I’m filing the George Obama story under the category of “siblings we sometimes wish we didn’t have.” Jimmy Carter had his beer-swilling brother Billy, who capitalized on his relationship to the President by endorsing Billy Beer. Bill Clinton had his half-brother, Roger Clinton Jr., who pleaded guilty to cocaine distribution while Clinton was governor of Arkansas, according to the Wiki.
In terms of the headline on this post, I’m cheating a bit, according to the Urban Dictionary, which defines “brother from another mother” as a “good friend that you’ve known almost your whole life.”
